WHAT THE BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE IS AND WHAT IT IS FOR
When we talk about bituminous membrane, we refer to a special cover that is made, of course, with bitumem, that is a mix of different elements coming mainly from Petroleum.

The bituminous membrane is one of the preferred material chosen for the coverage of terraces and balconies, thanks to its features in terms of quality, low costs, versatility of the product and easiness of laying.

It is a resistant material but it has to be anyway changed after a certain time and in this process the removal of the old bituminous membrane is necessary. THIS INVOLVES A BIG PROBLEM: THE DISPOSAL OF THE OLD BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE.

THE DISPOSAL OF THE BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE
The bituminous membrane is a difficult waste to be disposed and this operation has to be carried out in the correct way and timing. Otherwise there is the risk to cause a big damage to the enviroment, besides the fact to receive heavy fines.
The bituminous membrane, composed of few different materials, is considered a special waste and can not be disposed as a common waste. The guidelines of The European Community emphasize that the bituminous membrane, once removed, can release substances and waste that could be potentially dangerous for the health.
Therefore, they invite to follow their guidelines, that today propose to refer to incinerators or to companies having a production chain of bituminous conglomerates.
The full operation has to be made in the total respect of the above regulations, in particular regarding the enviroment and the individual protection.
The disposal procedure is not a simple operation at all. Obviously in case of need it is more convenient to get in touch with an expert. The importance of the partner choose is very high considering that the operation is delicate and complicate.
The choose of the supplier should take into account few factors. First of all the price, that should be surely proportioned to the difficulty of the offered service and should not be too cheap, in order to avoid what happened in Italy where cheap prices matched with unsuitable disposal services (to bury bituminous membrane waste, polluting the aquifer or to burn it polluting the enviroment with harmful fumes).

WAYS OF BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE DISPOSAL TODAY
The European guidelines about bituminous membrane disposal today propose:
INCINARATORS: the cost of the waste is 0,80 €/kilo. With this way of disposal it could be possible to regain feedstock energy in the form of electrical and/or thermal energy. Anyway, the incinarators have today a limited use due to the complex tecnique, handling and administration and the handicap of the emissions during the process is also involved.
RECYCLING IN THE BITUMINOUS CONGLOMERATE: cheaper and eco friendly solution. It is granted by companies equipped for the disposal of bituminous membranes at the end of life and for the set up of the material in the bituminous conglomerate and recently in the textile industries.
To the above costs, related to the only waste packaging, the labor cost for the removal and transport to landfill has to be added.
Bituminous membranes are classified among special waste and have to follow specific disposal rules, in order to avoid serious enviromental problems.

BITUMINOUS MEMBRANES RECYCLING IN THE BITUMINOUS CONGLOMERATES
The recycling activity is a very discussed subject with the goal of developing new and alternative technologies.
The saving of raw materials production has also to be considered, both in the recycling for production phase and in the recycling in other industrial systems.
Regarding the last point, the waste of polymer-bitumen are employed as basic material for the production of special bituminous conglomerates.

THE PRODUCTION OF BITUMINOUS CONGLOMERATE
In Italy bitumen-polymer membranes have been applying to the building field since 1960s. The new European regulations does not permit to send the membranes at the end of life (coming from demolitions) to landfill anymore.
The best solution to the problem, consolidated since few years in the Western Countries of Europe, is the bituminous membrane recycling in the bituminous conglomerate.
After seven years of research, the bituminous membrane has been transformed with the mixing with other innovative recycling substances (graphene), getting today a high performing polymer product, that increases the value of the bituminous conglomerate industry as the solution for the total and eco friendly recycling of the bituminous membrane waste.
